This is an extended single, or three track EP as we used to call it. Lead track Fiery Sabbath is from their debut album Fields Of Doom, while Gallows Walk is a new song and Sign Of the Wolf is a Pentagram cover featuring Monolord’s Esben Williams on drums.
Stone Nomads are a Texan three-piece who have taken their inspiration from, among others, Black Sabbath. Fiery Sabbath is one of the best from Fields Of Doom and as good an introduction as any to the band. They have a firm grasp of dynamics and it’s a full-on heady cocktail of riffs and Iommi-esque guitar solos. Vocally Jude Sisk is in the downbeat doom territory, which isn’t my thing much, but it works well enough. It would be interesting to hear how it would sound with a stronger vocal melody line.
Gallows Walk is the best track with a well-thought out mature style to it that does them credit. The rhythm section of Jude Sisk (bass) and Dwayne Crosby (drums) mesh together well, while Jon Cosky is a really fine guitarist. His two blended parts on Gallows Walk’’s reflective mid-section is a delight. The extended up-tempo outro of this is just superb.
Sign Of the Wolf is a different beast for them, a well-chosen cover from Pentagram’s classic debut. Cosky lets rip on this and it’s interesting to hear the band on what is for them a more commercial sounding song.
This is a band well worth checking out on Bandcamp. There are several albums to sample. This EP is there and is available for $2 download and that’s surely worth a punt!
