A key aspect of Opensight’s work are their outstanding videos. While being effective promos for their songs they are also really strong pieces in their own right. Each have a compelling narrative and quite phenomenal cinematic style.
The latest is Broken Vow , the song being one of the highpoints on their new album The Outfit. And let’s be clear here there are no low-points or average songs at all.
It’s their most ambitious video yet because of the intriguing subject matter. In short it’s a six-minute film presented as an instructional warning to new members of the organisation known as ‘The Outfit’. It documents what happened to three people who tried to leave, before turning to Opensight’s own induction. Cleverly it weaves together newly shot material with live footage (filmed at The Grace in London) and selected archive material. It’s an absorbing watch and must have taken ages to put together. Open plea to The Director – could we have a DVD of all the videos at some point?
The Youtube video comments from the band add that, ‘Broken Vow hints at the emotional reality of watching someone abandon what once mattered to them.’ Sobering isn’t it, but despite that warning I found myself signing up with The Outfit. There was an odd sense that this was in my destiny and any resistance was pointless. I noticed from the film that members of The Outfit receive a symbol of allegiance – I hope to receive mine soon . . .
Iron Maiden have Eddie and Marillion had a jester. The Director is more ominous, powerful and persuasive. I think we will be seeing more of him – at least I think it’s a him.
