Colossal Apostle: Face Stitcher (Bandcamp, October 2026)

Another quite different song from Colossal Apostle. I admire how diverse their material is and yet you still know it is them. They do have a recognisable signature which I think largely comes from Aaron’s voice which is so distinctive.

The Seattle grunge sound is a mild influence here. I like the ticking keyboard sound which reminds me of John Carpenter’s Halloween slowed down. The switch from that to the grunge riff back and forth is clever. Even more so is the unexpected almost prog-like section. When Aaron sings it sounds a lot like a Steven Wilson or Porcupine Tree song and that’s no bad thing.

The instrumental break is absorbing with tasteful lead guitar and then out comes Max for the Baritone sax. Now this is really interesting here because it adds these amazing different textures. Because the sax is closest instrumentally to the human voice we get this direct contrast particularly to Aaron. Indeed when he comes back in and the sax remains you can hear it clearly.

The song is an absolute beast and they make sure you know what lies at their core with a riff heavy ending augmented by that sax – the latest addition to their ‘colossal’ armoury. Can they keep up this fine run of songs, I don’t doubt it at all.

Colossal Apostle.
